Established  in 2005,  the Shugyokan Dojo is one of the few dojo in Gardena, California that  provides high-quality authentic and traditional Okinawan karate and Kobudo ( Weapons ).

Our kids and adults  instructors  are  established ,  qualified and experienced black belts , as well as world-class athletes.    The  Dojo instructors works  diligently to assist  students establish  goals, encouragement  and the  will to succeed  whatever it is  in their martial arts endeavor.

                                                  Traditional Karate

 

Our style is called  Matsubayashi Ryu Karate (松林流).  This fighting art was wstablished in Naha, Okinawa in 1947 by  Shoshin  Nagamine (1907-1997), a student of  several prominent and legendary  masters of  Okinawan  karate.  

 

Shugyokan Dojo is one of the few schools in southern California that  teaches and promote this traditional and  legitimate fighting art from Okinawa ~  The birthplace of Karate and Kobudo.  

 

Matsubayashi  Ryu  is a well  documented  with  verifiable unbroken  lineage  style of karate and is practiced  by millions all over the world today.   

                                        Ryukyu Tonfa Kobudo
 

Tong fa or tuifa, is a  weapon which plays in the armed component of Okinawan bugei ( Martial Arts) .   Kobudō is a Japanese term that can be translated as "old martial way".         
 

This Okinawan weapon may look simple in its appearance,  But ,  requires years of patiences practice due to many intricate movement.        
 

The Tonfa itself has given rise to several variations of the basic weapon – the PR-24 side handle police baton, and the  Police Baton.


Our trditional  kata comes from many ryuha  of  Okinawan Kobudo systems.  Classes are taught separately with additional cost
 

 

 

                                               Olympic Sports Karate

 

 Sports Karate is  a separate curriculum that is taught at the Shugyokan Dojo.   Sport Karate is a modern   non-style specific combat sports.   Despite lacking traditional karate characteristic.   Sports Karate can enhanced  Confidence, hard work ,  the value of goal setting, sacrifices,  dealing with failures and success, teamwork  and above all,  overcoming adversity.    Karate athletes competes in  two categories, Kata (型) and Kumite (組手). 

 

The Dojo currently trains Team Sakura the 2012 International World Okinawa Champions and winners  of several  international competition.   Since 2006, we have won over hundreds  Gold,  Silver and Bronze medals.   Team Sukura competes in WKF / USNKF Events.     

   

It must be noted that  Sports Karate is NOT traditional karate,  Therefore the Shugyokan does not give out belt ranks for this activity.
